Neil Armstrong was the first man who walked on the moon. Armstrong also flew on Gemini 8. On landing on the moon Armstrong famously said:

Buzz Aldrin was the second man to walk on the moon. Aldrin also flew on Gemini 12. Aldrin was the first person to urinate on the moon. Buzz Aldrin had the first conversation on the moon with Neil Armstrong:

Armstrong replied: Isn’t it magnificent?
Buzz Aldrin replied “Magnificent desolation.

Pete Conrad was the third man to walk on the moon. Conrad also flew on Gemini 5, Gemini 11 and Skylab 4 missions. As Conrad stepped off the ladder onto the moon he said:
Oooh, is that soft and queasy then Whoopee! Man, that may have been a small one for Neil, but that’s a long one for me.

Alan Bean was the fourth man to walk on the moon. Bean installed the first nuclear power generator station on the Moon. Bean also flew on the Skylab 3 mission. |

Alan Shepard became the first American in space on 5 May 1961 aboard the Freedom 7 mission. Interestingly the Thunderbirds TV puppet show character Alan Tracy was named after him. Alan Shepard was the fifth man to walk on the moon and holds two other moon records:
- Alan Shepard is the oldest man to walk on the moon, aged 47 years and 79 days.
- Alan
Al Shepard is the first man to the play golf on the moon.
After walking away from the lunar lander Alan Shepard said:
And it’s been a long way, but we’re here.

Edgar Mitchell was the sixth man to walk on the moon, and the first to throw a javelin . After retiring from NASA in 1972 he set up the Institute of Noetic Sciences which conducts parapsychological research. On stepping onto the moon Ed Mitchell said:
I think they put Champagne in the water. On the return journey, which changed his life, he said: bliss, almost like being in love.

David Dave Scott was the seventh man to walk on the moon and the first driver on the moon. He dropped a hammer and a feather simultaneously to prove one of Galileo’s theories. Scott also flew on the Gemini 8 and Apollo 9 missions. On his return Scott said:
The mind is a fire to be ignited, not a vessel to be filled.

James Jim Irwin was the eighth man to walk on the moon and, sadly, the first of the 12 moon walkers to pass away. After retiring from NASA he founded his High Flight Ministry in 1972. In an interview with the NY Times James Irwin said he had an epiphany on the moon:
I felt the power of God as I’d never felt it before.

John Young flew six missions: Gemini 3, Gemini 10, Apollo 10, Apollo 16, STS-1 and STS-9 – the most spacecraft in history. John Young was the ninth man to walk on he moon and he also holds two other records:
- The lowest heart rate during a Saturn V launch at just 70 beats per minute.
- Lunar speed record at 12 km/h.

Charles Duke Junior, aged 36 years 201 days, is the youngest man who walked on the moon. Charlie Duke has devoted his life to Christianity and while on the moon he said:
My walk on the moon lasted three days. My walk with God will last forever.

Eugene Gene Cernan was the eleventh man who walked on the moon. Cernan also flew on the Gemini 9 and Apollo 10 missions. Gene Cernan was the last man to walk on the moon and poignantly marked man’s last step off the moon with:
… we leave as we came and, God willing, we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17.

Harrison Schmitt was the twelfth man who walked on the moon. As a geologist he’s the only professional scientist to walk on the moon. Jack Schmitt became famous for taking the Blue Marble picture of Earth, which has become the most reproduced photograph in human history! Schmitt and Cernan sung a snippet of The Fountain in the Park song together on the Moon:
- Schmitt started:
I was strolling on the Moon one day
- Cernan joined in:
In the merry month of May
- Schmitt sang
December – the actual month, then…
When much to my surprise, a pair of bonny eyes then hummed the rest.
